Situation:
Tropical Cyclone Tam is expected to move southward from the tropics into the Tasman Sea today. Strong northeasterly winds, reaching severe gales with gusts to 120 km/h, and heavy rain are expected for the upper North Island today and tomorrow. Meanwhile a ridge moves eastwards off the South Island. Tropical Cyclone Tam is expected to transition to a subtropical low on Thursday. The deep low continues to move slowly southwards over the Tasman Sea on Friday and Saturday. A strong, moist northeasterly flow associated with the low continues to spread across New Zealand. Over the weekend, the low begins to weaken, and a southerly flow develops over the southern South Island.
