Twenty four Western Heights High School students have just completed CACTUS, an eight-week programme which is aimed at challenging behaviour through a disciplined and regimented training programme based on a military bootcamp.
CACTUS stands for ‘‘combined adolescent challenge training unit and support’’ and the programme finished on Saturday with ‘‘The Longest Day’’ — an eight-hour intensive physical test. Tasks included pulling a fire appliance along  Fenton Street.

It's been a while coming, but the Cronulla Sharks have finally made their way "home" to Taupo for their NRL match against the New Zealand Warriors. The two sides do battle at Owen Delany Park this Sunday. The Sydney-based rugby league side were officially welcomed to Taupo with a powerful powhiri  on the Lakefront yesterday morning, performed by the Wairakei kapa haka group.

Te Matatini - the pinnacle event for kapa haka - is at Wai O Hika Estate, west of Gisborne, until Sunday. There are 42 teams from around New Zealand and Australia competing for the title of best kapa haka team. Each group is allowed up to 40 performers. Te Arawa has five groups performing.

Taupo's Youthtown Rescue Helicopter was called to the Marokopa Falls where a young woman had fallen on to rocks while swimming. On the return flight to taupo it was diverted to a two-car head-on collision on SH1 south of Putaruru.
