Gallery: Relay for Life

About 400 people strode it out on the athletics track at Whanganui’s Cooks Gardens on Saturday. It was the Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, with entertainment and activities from 11am to 11pm. Participants were raising money for the society’s work supporting cancer sufferers and their families. Chronicle photographer Bevan Conley took pictures and video.

Gallery:Roll it on the river once more

Hundreds watched as Whanganui's PS Waimarie riverboat slid back into the river down a temporary slipway built for use during her five-yearly marine survey. Her boilers were stoked and ready, and traction engines were used to brake the downhill slide. Wanganui Chronicle photographer Lewis Gardner took photos and video.

Marton School's 150th anniversary gala drew big crowds on Saturday with many past pupils in attendance. Some of them had attended classes when the school was also the district high school. There were displays of the school's history and for motor enthusiasts, there displays of vintage vehicles and machinery. Photographer Bevan Conley went along and captured some of the excitement.

Boatbuilder Harry Nordberg has finally finished building the 9m long speedboat after 18 months. Made of multiple layers of African plywood and powered from a 7.4-litre 400kW V8 MerCruiser marine engine that sits amidships. Photos Bevan Conley.
