Christmas Parade 2011

Hundreds of excited children chatted and bounced along the pavements of Victoria Ave as they eagerly waited for the Christmas Parade to get under way on Saturday. The later start at 4pm had not deterred anyone. Wanganui families were out in full force with dozens of little girls in pretty dresses skipping and small boys striding it out in combat trou and caps. Suspected chlorine-gas leak at Splash Centre

A suspected chlorine gas leak at the Splash Centre saw the evacuation of more than 100 pool users before it was discovered that the incident was a false alarm. One of the sensors that detect chlorine gas levels within the facility's treatment plant was faulty and set off the automatic warning system.

Milford Wanderer

A major refit of a Fiordland tourist boat has come to an end and within a few days the Milford Wanderer will be at its home waters of Milford Sound ready for the summer season. The refit, which was carried for an undisclosed sum, started in May at the Q-West Boat Builders yard at Castlecliff and has been completed on time and on budget.

The heritage buildings open day on Saturday gave the public a rare opportunity to inspect the interiors of many familiar old city landmarks. Fine weather laced with a stiff breeze blew for the 21st Annual Aranui Primary School Interschool Cross Country Run yesterdaty. With 427 children from 30 Wanganui schools competing, the grounds at Aranui School were teeming with parents, grandmas, grandads, small brothers, sisters, and teachers.

Wanganui vs Wairarapa-Bush

Wanganui have earned home advantage for the Heartland Championship rugby playoffs with a 29-14 win over Wairarapa-Bush. Saturday's success put the city's Heartland heroes on top of the championship table and set up a Meads Cup semifinal at Cooks Gardens next weekend against Mid Canterbury, the only team to beat Wanganui in round-robin play. If Wanganui win that match they will host the final on October 8 against either holders North Otago or East Coast.

Thousands of people descended on Jubilee Stadium at the weekend for the Wanganui Chronicle Home & Lifestyle Show, where visitors could buy anything from paint to spa pools. Chronicle photographer Stuart Munro joined the crowds and captured these images.

The Big Paint

The sun shone brightly on Saturday as 100 artists turned out at the Whanganui War Memorial Hall forecourt in their painting gear to get stuck in to creating a 7.5x5m masterpiece. The Big Paint, part of the Real Whanganui Literary Festival, saw 100 artists and non-artists roll up their sleeves and put brush to canvas to recreate Leigh Mitchell-Anyon's composite photograph from pre-dawn to dusk of the Wanganui landscape, featuring the Sarjeant Gallery and Mt Ruapehu.
