The Wanganui East Rural Schools' Cluster played to a packed-out Wanganui Opera House on Wednesday evening, with their first-ever variety concert, Country Kids Come to Town.
NEW Zealand Olympic double gold medallist swimmer Danyon Loader was greeted with awe and huge applause at Westmere School yesterday. He arrived in a genuine London double-decker bus painted like a New Zealand flag and with pictures of great athletes on the sides. The Mediaworks Radio Live Rivercity Championships displayed strength, grace, charm and colour as the dancers competed in 67 events in the Wanganui Girls' College Hall on Saturday afternoon. Dancesport Wanganui committee treasurer Serena Richards said the competitions were held every year with dancers from Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North competing against the local talent. Wanganui's junior winter sports leagues are in full swing now, and on Saturday hundreds of kids took advantage of the autumn sunshine to enjoy a game of football, rugby or netball. Today's Wanganui Chronicle is an historic document. It is the last-ever weekday Chronicle in broadsheet (large page) format. After today, only our Big Weekend Chronicle (published Saturdays) will take this form. From Monday, your weekday Chronicle will be a compact, user-friendly tabloid paper. Wanganui basked in sunshine over the Easter weekend and locals and visitors to the city enjoyed the balmy weather. Chronicle photographer Bevan Conley caught up with those who relaxed with family members in and around the city.
