Waipatiki Beach Holiday Park a gem on Napier's doorstep

Sitting among rolling hills Waipatiki Beach Holiday Park is a popular getaway for many Hawke's Bay locals.

Situated just 30 minutes north of Napier, Waipatiki Beach Holiday Park is a classic Hawke's Bay camping destination.

Anyone lucky enough to dig their toes into Waipatiki Beach's golden sands may mistake their location for an exotic island - if one ignores the sight of Napier's port in the distance that is.

Waipatiki Beach Holiday Park spokeswoman Leonie Laking said its proximity made it an accessible camping utopia for all.

"It's just so handy, you're close to town but also in the country. It's a slice of paradise out here and the birdlife is fantastic," she said.

Those planning to camp at Waipatiki this summer should heed Ms Laking's words and keep their eyes peeled for native birds such as tui, kereru and bellbirds.

The holiday park is versatile in terms of camping services, offering self-contained, kitchen and standard cabins with both powered and non-powered campsites.

Those opting to pitch a tent will find the facilities include a communal kitchen, lounge room, hot showers, toilets, laundry and a camp shop.

Being the first sand beach north of Napier, Waipatiki has many drawcards, including numerous coastal and bush walking tracks that showcase kahikatea trees, nikau palms and a redwood forest.

The sandy beach is suitable for swimming, surfing, fishing, boating and diving and also has various freshwater streams popular with younger children.
